A clinically reviewed guide to adult ADHD assessment in Ireland, including developmental evidence, interviews, differential diagnosis, reports and medication questions.

Adult ADHD Assessment in Ireland: What to Expect
Direct answerAn adult ADHD assessment should be a full clinical and psychosocial evaluation across development and current life—not a diagnosis based only on a screening score.

What an adult ADHD assessment is designed to establish

The assessment considers whether a persistent pattern of attention, impulsivity or activity-related difficulties began during development, occurs across relevant settings and causes meaningful impairment. It also asks whether another condition, context or health factor better explains some or all of the presentation.

The information commonly considered

A pathway may include a detailed clinical interview, structured ADHD interview, validated questionnaires, developmental history, information from someone who knows the person well, school or clinical records where available and a review of functional impact at work, education, relationships and home.

Why screening questionnaires are not enough

Screeners identify experiences that may justify further assessment. They do not establish onset, pervasiveness, impairment, alternative explanations or clinical significance. A high score can occur for several reasons, while a lower score does not automatically rule out a complex presentation.

Differential and co-occurring needs

Sleep, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, autism, learning differences, medication effects and physical-health conditions may affect concentration or executive functioning. ADHD can also co-occur with some of these. The assessment needs to distinguish overlap from evidence specific to ADHD.

Feedback, report and medication

The feedback should explain the conclusion, evidence, limitations and recommendations. A psychologist cannot prescribe medication. If medication is being considered, a medical prescriber will make an independent decision and may require their own assessment or additional information.

Common questions

Do adults in Ireland need a GP referral for a private ADHD assessment?

A private provider can usually be contacted directly, although the provider may recommend GP involvement depending on health, risk, medication or the purpose of the report.

How long does assessment take?

There is no universally correct number of appointments. Complexity, developmental evidence and report purpose influence the pathway.

Will every psychiatrist accept a psychologist’s report?

No provider can guarantee this. Ask the intended prescriber or service about its requirements before paying for assessment.
